The reasons i chose pictures of spiders was because the whole story started off when Darren and Steve go to a freak circus; where a spider was one of the attractions. Darren was instantly in fascination with it, as soon as he saw it his eyes lit up. The night after the show, Darren goes back to take the spider. The spider bites his best friend Steve, and Darren is stuck between confessing to the leader of the circus(who is a vampire) to get the antidote and becoming his assistant or letting his best friend die. The reason for the quote and picture relating to friendship and family is because Daren has to leave his friends and family to begin his new life as a Vampire Assistant.
This all tells us that Daren is a very good, loyal friend and he is responsible. He did what he had to get Steve the cure. I think this also shows that Darren and the spider will grow a strong bond, and she might even save his life later in the story.
